Using past papers in a revision timetable that works

By Ms. Akinyi · 12 Oct 2026 · 6 min read · 👁 5,210 views

Many learners only start past papers in the last week. A better approach is to use them from the start of revision, in stages.

Stage 1: Diagnose

Do one full paper under light timing. Mark it with the marking scheme and list the topics where marks were lost. This becomes your revision map.

Stage 2: Revise by topic

Spend most of your time on the weakest topics, using notes and short questions from the same topic in past papers. Mix in one stronger topic each session to keep confidence up.

Stage 3: Timed practice

Two to three weeks before the exam, switch to full timed papers. After each paper, review every lost mark and write the correct method in your own words.

Stage 4: Final week

Stop learning new content. Re-read your error log, redo a few tricky questions and get proper sleep.

Teachers can speed this up by giving the class the marking scheme after each practice paper and asking learners to mark each other's work.
